World Bread Day - Let's not be wasteful

In collaboration with Eat the Ball I want to use this chance to write about the international world bread day and draw some attention to the wasteful habits some people have regarding food.

Personally, this is a topic that is super important to me. I come from a very traditional Austrian family with a grandma that still lived through the second world war and had to save every little piece of bread she could get in order to share it with her siblings. She taught my mom and my mom taught me to never be wasteful with my food. I think this is a very important attitude.

We all know those people who go to a restaurant and order something, have five bites and send the rest right back to the trash - what a wasteful behavior.

Together with Eat the Ball we did a little research and found a couple of crazy numbers.

Can you believe that worldwide 1,3 billion tons of food are wasted?! We only eat about 67% of the food that is produced. Looking more closely at the bread consumption it is unbelievable that every year people alone in Germany buy 12kg of bread that they don’t even eat. This is a sad fact in a world where so many people still die of hunger every day.

So, why do we buy food that we don’t need?

With this article, I simply want you to challenge your own eating habits. In what ways are you being wasteful? Is there something you can improve wasting less food?

I love to work with companies who actively try to fight against wasting precious food. Especially bread, as a staple food should not be thrown away thoughtlessly. That is why I am supporting Eat the Ball today on this international day of bread. The Austrian start-up came up with a patent for a more efficient bread production process through a slow fermentation method. Sounds complicated, but it works! Eat the Ball is awesome if you want bread that is fresh for a really long time and still has the full taste.

For this international bread day I created a special recipe that uses the infamous Earthball to honor the international world bread day!

Pumpkin Earthball Soup

Ingredients:

4 Eat the Ball Earthballs

300g of Hokaido pumpkin

1 onion

1 vegetable soup stock

100ml of milk (coconut milk is also possible)

300ml of water

How to do it:

The awesome thing about Hokaido is that you dont have to peel it. So simply cut the pumpkin and the onion up into little pieces and cook it together with the vegetable soup stock in a pot with the water.

Once cooked put it into a blender and mix well. Add the milk and mix again. If you want you can add more spices now (anything from kurkuma to pepper to curry work).

Take the Earthballs and cut the top off with a sharp knife. Hollow out the inner bread and then carefully pour the soup into the ball. If you want you can now decorate it with a couple of drops of pumpkin seed oil and add some greens (basil/parsley) on top.
